Pie is basically happiness in a crust. Maybe it’s the golden edges, the juicy fruit bubbling like an extra-sticky hottub or the fact that one forkful can launch you straight into bliss. Up in Northern Ontario, that joy has an address along the Superior Pie Path, a road trip stuffed with flavour, charm and flaky fabulousness. Want tips on how to explore that Pie Path? Check out our blog all about it!
This post however, is basically a love letter to some of the best pies we devoured along the Pie Path! Keep reading if you want to feel hungry. Then, go try them for yourself!
1. Classic Wild Blueberry Pie
Where to get it: Silver Islet General Store, near Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (View Map)
We came to Silver Islet General Store with one mission: to selfishly devour their famous wild blueberry pie. If you ask us, Northern Ontario and wild blueberries are basically synonymous so it’s no wonder why this pie pulls in folks from all over.
Made with handpicked local berries that burst with flavour in every bite, this slice is anything but ordinary. The golden crust is just firm enough to hold together without overshadowing the rich, jammy filling.
If that one slice has you wanting to try more of Silver Islet General Store’s tasty eats, you’re in luck. Bonus bites include their apple pie, laced with cinnamon and brown sugar and the gooey cinnamon buns, which might just steal the show if you’re in the mood for something extra indulgent.
Of course, you’ll want to wash it all down with something delicious. Try pairing up that blueberry (or apple!) pie with their blueberry lemon herbal iced tea poured over ice and topped with whole berries. If you ask us, it’s best enjoyed from their patio overlooking the water but tastes equally delicious on a cozy, rainy day indoors.
2. Pie Sundaes
Where to get it: Ducky’s Diner, 522 Trans-Canada Hwy 11-17, Nipigon (View Map)
At Ducky’s Diner, prepare yourself for a whole lotta sundae goodness. This pie-sundae mashup is the best thing to happen since the Jonas Brothers got back together.
This colourful roadside gem is all about bold comfort food and unexpected twists including their pie path specialty— the Apple Pie Sundae. For pie purists, consider this one a deconstructed take on a classic.
This apple pie sundae layers warm spiced apples with creamy vanilla ice cream, a dusting of cinnamon and a silky caramel-style drizzle. It’s a scrumptious way to satisfy both your pie craving and ice cream obsession in one glorious cup.
Need more sweetness? You’re in luck. Ducky’s rotating sundae menu reads like a greatest hits of fruity indulgence and apple isn’t the only thing on the menu. We tried the blueberry pie sundae with lemonade compote and the strawberry rhubarb swirl too! Both are over-the-top in the best way, and bursting with flavour.
3. An Unforgettable Billy Miner Pie
Where to get it: Drifters, 3 Simcoe Plaza, Terrace Bay (View Map)
This isn’t your everyday Billy Miner Pie! This classic Canadian staple, originally created by The Keg gets a serious upgrade at Drifters in Terrace Bay. So what is it?
This pie stacks a frozen mocha slice that somehow manages to be rich and refreshing all at once. Built on a crunchy chocolate graham crust, it’s layered with smooth mocha ice cream, drizzled in fudge and topped with a swirl of whipped cream that’s straight out of a vintage soda shop dream.
This pie is the kind of dessert that makes you pause mid-bite and say, “Wait… why don’t more places serve this?” It’s retro, it’s indulgent and it’s absolutely worth making a detour for.
Need a break from fruit pies? This is your creamy, chocolatey reset.
4. Old School Chicken Pot Pie
Where to get it: The Little Pie Shop at Thunder Bay Country Market, 425 Northern Avenue, Thunder Bay (View Map)
Looking to grab and go for later? The Little Pie Shop in Thunder Bay specializes in cozy, homestyle savoury pies that freeze beautifully! Our absolute fav? The mini chicken pot pies that bring us right back to sitting at the counter after school and smelling that savoury goodness wafting from the oven.
Think golden crusts filled with tender chicken, vegetables, and a creamy sauce. We can’t wait to enjoy one after a long fall hike on a crisp autumn day!
5. Strawberry Rhubarb Hand Pie
Where to get it: pie.ology at Thunder Bay Country Market, 425 Northern Avenue, Thunder Bay (View Map)
Okay we seriously can’t stop thinking about this sweet little number. The strawberry-rhubarb hand pie was a seasonal beauty served up by the folks at pie.ology and we’re already counting down the days until we can get it again next year. The exterior was a pocket of golden, flaky crust that crumbled nicely when bit into.
The filling? *Chef’s kiss*. Think a sweet, syrupy combo of wild strawberries, balanced out by the tartness of garden-grown rhubarb. We’re still not over it!
While this one isn’t on the menu right now, we highly recommend sampling a few different hand pies like their bumbleberry complete with Belluz Farms raspberries, strawberries and blueberries or their fall-inspired apple raspberry hand pie. If savoury is more your thing, check out their decadent shepherd’s pie hand pie stuffed with Cornell Farms ground beef, mashed potatoes, carrots, peas and gravy. Yum!
