Eat Local This Earth Day: Why It Matters More Than Ever

5 reasons to choose a Feast On® restaurant in Ontario

With Earth Day just around the corner, it’s a good reminder to make more thoughtful choices—what we buy, where we go, what ends up on our plate.

But this year, those choices feel a little closer to home.

Across Ontario, more people are paying attention to where their money goes. Between rising costs, ongoing trade tensions, and a growing desire to support Canadian businesses, there’s been a noticeable shift: we want to keep things local—and feel good about doing it.

The good news? That can be as simple as going out for dinner!

Choosing a Feast On® certified restaurant is one of the easiest (and most delicious) ways to support the planet, the local economy, and the people behind our food system (all at once!).

And honestly, if you’re going to eat out anyway, it’s a pretty great place to start.

First, What is Feast On®?

If you’ve spotted the Feast On® logo on a restaurant door, here’s what it actually means.

Feast On® is Ontario’s local food certification, developed by the Culinary Tourism Alliance. It recognizes restaurants that are committed to sourcing Ontario-grown and produced food and drink—and proving it.

To be certified, restaurants must spend at least 25% on local ingredients, though most go well beyond that. It’s measured, audited, and rooted in transparency.

So when you dine at a Feast On® restaurant, you’re not guessing—you know it’s local.

1. Supporting Local Feels More Important Than Ever

“Support local” has taken on a bit more meaning lately.

Whether it’s choosing Ontario-grown produce at the grocery store or swapping in Canadian-made products where we can, people are thinking more intentionally about their choices.

Dining at a Feast On® restaurant is one way to act on that. It directly supports Ontario farmers, producers, and makers, helping keep food dollars in the province and closer to home.

It might seem like a small decision, but it adds up in a big way.

2. It’s a Simple Way to Make a More Sustainable Choice

Let’s be honest—sustainability can feel like a lot.

But eating local? That’s one of the easier wins.

When ingredients travel shorter distances, they spend less time in trucks, planes, and storage. Less travel means a lighter environmental impact—it’s as simple as that.

No big lifestyle overhaul required. Just a good meal, made with ingredients that didn’t have to cross a continent to get to you.

3. The Flavour Speaks for Itself

Here’s where things get really good.

When chefs source locally, they’re working with ingredients that are fresher, more seasonal, and often picked at their peak. And you can taste it.

Think:

  • that first bite of asparagus in the spring
  • sweet Ontario strawberries that actually taste like strawberries
  • tomatoes in August that don’t need much more than a pinch of salt

Menus start to reflect what’s actually happening on the land, and they change with it.

And because Ontario’s producers are constantly innovating (greenhouse growing, small-batch everything, year-round creativity), there’s always something new to discover.

We’re not complaining!

4. Your Meal Supports a Whole Network of People

A great meal doesn’t happen in isolation.

Behind every dish is a network of farmers, fishers, bakers, cheesemakers, brewers, and distributors—all working together to bring that experience to life.

Choosing a Feast On® restaurant helps support that entire ecosystem. It also helps reduce tourism leakage, meaning more of your money stays in the community instead of leaving it.

At a time when local businesses are navigating rising costs and shifting conditions, that support matters more than ever.

5. You Get a Better Story with Your Meal

There’s something pretty great about knowing where your food comes from.

At Feast On® restaurants, that connection is part of the experience. Ingredients aren’t anonymous—they’re tied to real people and real places across Ontario.

You might see farms listed on the menu. You might hear about the producer behind a dish. You might even recognize a name from a market you’ve visited.

And suddenly, dinner comes with a bit more context (and a better story to tell!).

So, Where to Next?

If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day that feels meaningful (and genuinely enjoyable), this is a good place to start.

Find a Feast On® restaurant.
Order something seasonal.
Ask a question or two.

Support local—not just because it’s good for the planet, but because it’s good for Ontario.

And really—because it tastes better.
