Silver Islet General Store: A Slice of History
Where: Silver Islet, near Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (View Map)
The Pie: A rotating selection of homemade pies, including their famous wild blueberry pie
We’re starting strong and scenic. Tucked right at the tip of the Sibley Peninsula, just past Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, is the charming village of Silver Islet. And at its heart? The legendary Silver Islet General Store, a 140-year-old treasure that smells like fresh baking and feels like stepping into a storybook. It’s painted a bright blue so you definitely won’t miss it!
This place isn’t just cute, it’s iconic. The Tea Room inside the store has been turning out homemade pies since 1993 using family recipes passed down through generations. Sandy and Jeff Korkola now carry on the legacy, baking up classics.
We, of course, tried a slice of the blueberry pie made with fresh wild blueberries so synonymous with Northern Ontario. It melts in your mouth and you can taste those fresh, local blueberries in every bite. The crust? Just the right amount of crispy and golden. Ratios matter in pie math, and let us tell you, this is mathematically the most delicious pie around.
And while the blueberry pie might steal the show, their apple pie deserves a standing ovation too. It’s a comforting classic, lovingly spiced, and rounds out the experience like a warm hug.
To wash it all down, we sipped on their famous blueberry lemon herbal iced tea, a refreshing, caffeine-free dream served over ice and topped (naturally) with more fresh blueberries.
And don’t even get us started on the cinnamon buns. Sticky, soft and loaded with cinnamon sugar swirl goodness, they’re a must-try whether you’re stopping for lunch or just swinging by for treats.
You can enjoy it all from their beautiful outdoor patio or get cozy in the tea room, where time seems to slow down and second helpings just make sense. The General Store also serves up locally made pizza, hearty daily soups and a rotating selection of other homemade bites.
Ducky’s Diner: Apple Pie but Make It a Sundae
Where: 522 Trans-Canada Hwy 11-17, Nipigon (View Map)
The Pie: Apple Pie Sundae
If you joined us on the Superior Picnics trail, this stop might feel a little familiar. Trust us, Ducky’s Diner has way more than just smokies and lemonade (although those are so delicious too).
This cozy roadside favourite is known for playful twists on classic comfort food and their desserts are no exception. On the Superior Pie Path, Ducky’s is serving up a sweet treat that’s part sundae, part pie and 100 percent delicious.
Enter the Apple Pie Sundae, a layered masterpiece featuring warm spiced apples, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a cinnamon sprinkle and a drizzle of creamy sweet sauce. It’s like your grandma’s apple pie took a summer vacation and came back cooler.
With its retro diner vibes and always-rotating dessert menu, Ducky’s is the kind of place you’ll want to linger. Sit on the patio, people-watch for a bit and maybe grab an extra sundae for the road. You’ve earned it.
Drifters: Billy Miner Pie with a View
Where: 3 Simcoe Plaza, Terrace Bay (View Map)
The Pie: Billy Miner Pie
Back in Terrace Bay, where Superior Picnics brought you to the beach for berry salad bliss, we’re now diving fork-first into something a little richer.
At Drifters Restaurant, you’ll find classic diner desserts like their Billy Miner Pie, a total showstopper! Is it just us, or is Billy Miner Pie just not on enough menus anymore?
This layered treat is perfect for anyone who loves chocolate, coffee and ice cream all in one bite. With a chocolate graham crust, mocha ice cream, fudge sauce and whipped cream, it’s sweet, cool and satisfyingly decadent.
Hot Tip: Grab a slice to-go and head back to Terrace Bay Beach for dessert with a view. Waves, wind and whipped cream? Yes please.
Thunder Bay Country Market: Two Pie Stops, One Tasty Destination
Where: 425 Northern Avenue, Thunder Bay (View Map)
When: Wednesdays 3:30–6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m.–1 p.m.
The Pie: We’re wrapping up the trail with not one, but two pie-packed stops at the Thunder Bay Country Market, a local farmers’ market that takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Whether you’re a sweet pie purist or a meat pie enthusiast, this is where you’ll want to clear some space in your cooler.
Stop One: The Little Pie Shop
Start downstairs with The Little Pie Shop, known for its hearty, savoury pies packed with comforting, homestyle flavour. Their chicken pot pie is a must-try on a cool day, but there’s always a variety of rotating fillings to check out, so go with what speaks to you.
Bonus: they freeze beautifully, so grab one for now and another for later.
Stop Two: Pie.ology
Head upstairs to Pie.ology, where the magic of hand pies comes alive. These flaky little pockets are made for snacking, sharing or hoarding for yourself. The menu rotates often, but favourites include Shepherd’s Pie Hand Pies, Ploughman’s Pie and seasonal sweet options like garden rhubarb or wild strawberry.
Vendors Malcolm and Amanda Hope put local ingredients front and center, so every bite gives you a true taste of Northern Ontario. And yes, it’s completely acceptable to eat one in each hand. We did just that!
Crust Us, This Isn’t Goodbye
